When Gram was 20, she married Carl Hanson. They farmed on a ranch in the Brewster area for five years and then moved to western Washington, first to Seattle and then to small farms in rural Pierce county. They moved fairly frequently and had children fairly frequently too. By 1932 they’d had eight children, seven still living. A year later, as the Depression gathered steam, Carl left the family to look for work elsewhere. He never returned. |
