"I used to ride Biddy to school, and in the winter the snow would come up to her belly," she’d recount. "One day I stood on Biddy’s back and fell off backwards into the snow with my arms out, to make a snow angel, you see. It was so fun I did it all the way home. I left a whole trail of snow angels.

"Papa came riding home sometime afterwards and saw those snow angels. When he got home, he said, 'And who made those body prints in the snow?' Well, you know, it was me," she would laugh. "You know, I got a whipping, but I didn't care because in those days young ladies wore long wool dresses, long slips, and thick stockings. When Papa whipped me, I didn't feel a thing!"

"Biddy was a good old horse," she’d always conclude.

Signe with her brothers, David Christian and Jacob Jorgen.
